NoHype Copywriting The Keys to Lively Appealing and Truthful Sales Writing (Audible Audio Edition) Marcia Yudkin Creative Ways Publishing Books Reviews

I'm a creative writer getting back into marketing. This concise book brought back to mind all the basics and eased my new-job fears. Includes excellent examples that stirred my imagination. Clearly written, easily read.
As a long-time copywriting teacher and author of 16 books on writing and marketing, Marcia Yudkin knows her stuff. In this ebook she condenses her marketing and copywriting wisdom into a step-by-step guide that helps you create powerful and engaging marketing copy using time-tested tools of persuasion, without resorting to "hypey" over-the-top sales writing you see so often online and in print.

There's no fluff here, just the key elements of what you need to write effective marketing copy. The book shows you how to get started by gathering the key messages you need to build your marketing document. It explains and illustrates 21 copywriting techniques that help draw your readers into your sales message and keep them moving along. And it gives you tips on how to polish your headlines, develop the right tone for your audience, and edit your copy.

"No-Hype Copywriting" is ideal for beginning copywriters, or for business owners who wish to create their own marketing documents. But it's also a good refresher for experienced copywriters who wish to stay away from the loud, unbelievable, cringe-worthy sales copy you find in the internet marketing industry.

If you're writing to sell snake oil, look elsewhere. But if you need to write crisp and powerful copy that respects the intelligence and dignity of your prospect while still driving sales, this book is well worth your attention.
As the owner of a marketing company, I tell clients we are all given a finite number of exclamation points to use in our lives, and most people have run through their allotment by the time they enter college. Except for future marketing executives and copywriters, and most of them have run through their quota by the time they get to kindergarten. Exclamation points are synthetic excitement. They are annoying. And they don't work. If you need to use them to create excitement, then you'd better think about rewriting the copy that came before. That's where the excitement should start. Marcia Yudkin's little book, "No-Hype Copywriting," is a helpful primer on how how to write exciting copy while leaving the hype behind. It's a quick read, but it is even more valuable as a reference source, whenever you find yourself sitting in front of your computer mulling over approaches to a writing project. I keep a copy on my , and everyone who knows me knows I always have my with me. Thank you, Marcia.
At last, someone gets it. Yes, we hate the hype, but how do you excite your prospects into pressing the "add to cart" button (and checking out) or picking up the phone without sounding desperate? Because ultimately, at least for me, that's what the hype is all about. Sounding desperate.

Anything but that, right? So what do we do? Ms. Yudkin finds in her experience that most of write too little, being too quiet in how we come across. Guilty as charged for this writer.

But it's not the number of words, it's how we paint the picture. It's not just about reciting a bunch of dry facts and hoping the customer finds that irresistible because we said so.

Well, I knew that, but knowing and doing are two different things.

Well, here's the good part. She shows us how to do it, paints the pictures. In a step by process (3 steps is all) with real life examples, Ms. Yudkin breaks down the elements of marketing pieces and shows us the difference between dry and dull copy and compelling copy that comes across as honest. What to do first, how to write headlines, what you need to say (more than you think) and what to do at the end of every piece.

All in this little book. Seriously. Put this next to your dictionary and thesaurus.
Much of the marketing copy one finds on the Web these days is dreadful -- overhyped, garishly presented, and lacking in credibility. And as Marcia notes in her introduction to this compact but comprehensive guide, many business owners fear that copy prepared for them will embarrass them with its over-the-top style.

The good news is that learning to write no-hype copy means learning how to write good copy, period. So, while Marcia clearly outlines what's hype and what's not, it's the systematic approach to writing copy she provides that makes this ebook so valuable.

The 21 no-hype copywriting techniques alone make this a worthwhile purchase. But the book is more than a list of techniques; it's an overall strategy for effective copywriting. It starts with the fundamental elements no good copy can do without -- what Marcia calls "the bones" -- which then get fleshed out and revisited as you develop your copy. And all of this is backed up with helpful and entertaining examples that clearly illustrate the principles presented.

Which brings me to another reason for recommending this book. If you've read any of Marcia's books, taken any of her courses, or read her website copy, you already know how creative she is with language. With No-Hype Copywriting, not only do you learn techniques for developing effective sales copy, you also get exposed to great writing. And that's something anyone who values good copy will appreciate.
it doesn't read particularly smoothly, is contradictory and lacks examples.
says not to use emotional words on the first page, says to use emotion words half way through.
no examples.
Marcia gets right to the point and stays on point. Copywriting is usually a lot of bunk, but she has devised guidelines for copy that is truthful, well-written, and concise.
